"Moost" Interesting Updates!

May 2015

Dear Parents,

We have had an amazing year in first grade. The children were happy, energetic, eager to learn, and always willing to help. This is a true credit to all of you. They were a pleasure to teach and a joy to watch grow physically, academically, socially, and spiritually. As we plan for the summer months ahead and prepare for the transition to second grade, we have a few suggestions for you to continue supporting your child’s progress and development.

Our faith is the core of our curriculum at St. Clement. Please continue bringing your child to Sunday mass, encourage daily prayer, and spend quality time together as a family enjoying the beauty of God’s creation.

Your child made great strides in Language Arts this year. Daily reading is extremely important and helps build fluency and comprehension. The library has a great reading rewards program and many other free reading club events throughout the summer. There are also wonderful websites and apps for your devices with online stories and games that build reading and phonics skills. We also encourage you to have your child keep writing—whether it is an illustrated story, a poem, or a journal about the events of the day or week. Writing practice fosters spelling, grammar, and handwriting skills. We always love reading the children’s writing. They are so creative and quite funny!

Our math program offers a series of lessons entitled, “Step Up to Grade 2,” which is attached to this letter. While optional, these 10 lessons introduce the children to higher-level concepts that bridge the first and second grade curriculums. We also cannot stress enough the importance of continuing to practice addition and subtraction math facts into the teens.

Most importantly this summer, relax and have fun! Visit museums, go on a picnic, swim, and play. Encourage your child’s passions, from sports to science to the arts. Your child worked so hard this year, and his or her accomplishments deserve to be celebrated! It really is amazing how quickly the children grow. Enjoy this precious time together, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Thank you for your support and for sharing your child with us this year. We are truly honored to have been his or her teacher. We wish you a safe, happy, and blessed summer.
